Solved: Registry-based account changes do not become active on Windows
The problem has been solved today, 02.01.2025 at about 10:30.

Password changes made from 27.12.2024 have to be communicated to Windows again. To do this, log on to https://registry.desy.de, select “Password” -> “Repropagate Password” in the menu, enter your current password again and confirm the input with “Repropagate Password”.

All other actions performed during the disturbance will be automatically repropagated.

Communication between the DESY Registry (https://registry.desy.de and https://passwd.desy.de) and Windows is currently disrupted. This means that all account actions relating to Windows, e.g. password changes, account prolongations and others, do not become active for Windows.

This does not affect account changes related to all other services, e.g. Mail or Sync & Share. These will become active as usual after a short time.

As soon as the fault has been rectified, all transactions will also be carried out for Windows.

Today, Tuesday, 17.12.2024, from approx. 6.22 a.m. to approx. 6.45 a.m. during the recommissioning of the WAN firewall, an unexpected
restart occurred which caused that the DMZ (demilitarized zone) as well as the Internet and various services were not accessible from outside.

The GPFS mounts on the Maxwell worker nodes were a little longer affected.

Therefore the login to some central Linux systems (e.g. bastion.desy.de) is not possible for the affected accounts. In addition, access to the AFS user directories of these accounts as well as to some AFS group directories is not possible.

On Friday, 15.11.2024, the monthly Windows Updates will be released. Please install them on your DESY Windows devices as soon as possible to ensure that they are up-to-date and secure.

To do this, connect your Windows device to the internal DESY network after the updates have been released. Use VPN if you are extern. When prompted or at the end of the day, restart or shut down your Windows device.

On Wednesday, 20.11.2024 from 17 - 20h it is not possible to guarantee trouble-free operation in the Windows environment. This is due to regular maintenance work on the central Windows servers.

It is recommended to log off or shut down DESY Windows devices on Wednesday before the maintenance starts. You should also log off from public Windows systems (terminal servers) beforehand.

On Tuesday, 15.10.2024, maintenance work will be carried out on the Oracle infrastructures.
There are several clusters under maintenance, so it is difficult to give an exact schedule, but the work on the IT-RAC should be completed by late noon.
We will inform the users of the IT-RAC separately about the completion of the work.

In general, the DB services are available and should be accessible.
However, there will always be session interruptions as the database services have to be swivelled.

This means that for most applications that work request-orientated, such as
web servers etc., or where session pools are used, such as Apex applications, there will be hardly any impairment.

There is a residual risk of transactions being cancelled, so attention should be paid to ensuring that data has actually been saved or, even better, that access is read-only.

Affected by the maintenance work are ALL

Release of the monthly Windows Updates
On Freitag, 12.7.2024, the monthly Windows Updates will be released. Please install them on your DESY Windows devices as soon as possible to ensure that they are up-to-date and secure.

To do this, connect your Windows device to the internal DESY network after the updates have been released. Use VPN if you are extern. When prompted or at the end of the day, restart or shut down your Windows device.

On Wednesday, 17.07.2024 from 17 - 20h it is not possible to guarantee trouble-free operation in the Windows environment. This is due to regular maintenance work on the central Windows servers.

It is recommended to log off or shut down DESY Windows devices on Wednesday before the maintenance starts. You should also log off from public Windows systems (terminal servers) beforehand.

Change to Anycast DNS on central Linux installations
On Monday, 06.01.2025, the name resolution on central Linux installations will be changed to Anycast DNS. Anycast DNS increases the availability and reliablity of name resolutions on Linux.

After the change, only a single DNS server (dns.desy.de - 10.0.0.20) will be configured in /etc/resolv.conf. Additionally, the DHCP templates bios_Linux & uefi_Linux will be changed to Anycast DNS as well.

This change has been announced in the Computer User Committee (CUC).

Computer Center and UCO Opening Hours towards the End of the Year
By the end of the year, the DESY data center and the UCO will be staffed:

- Mon., 23.12.
- Fri., 27.12.

Each day from 9:00h; Mon. until 17:00h / Fri. until 15:00h

On the following days the DESY computer center as well as the UCO won't be staffed and thus only the IT on-call service will be reachable on the following days:

Restricting external access to XWiki
As agreed in the CUC, as of Tuesday, 03.12.2024 access from extern to the Wiki service XWiki (https://xwiki.desy.de) will only be possible via VPN or SSH.
A solution for worldwide read access without login for Spaces which have to be activated explicitly for this kind of access, is currently being developed.

The reason for this measure is to increase the security level of the information provided in XWiki.

Restriction of GEANT-TCS Certificates - Action needed
The DFN-Verein will severely restrict the GEANT TCS certificate service which is offered via the service provider Sectigo. Sectigo has unilaterally terminated the service as of 10.1.2025.

This means that it will no longer be possible to issue new server and user certificates from this date at the latest. This also applies to IGTF certificates in the grid computing environment. GEANT and DFN are working on providing the service via a new provider as quickly as possible.

Time scales are not yet known here, as soon as
information is available we will let you know.

If you are using server or user certificates from the above-mentioned certificate service yourself we strongly recommend that you renew the certificates that are due to expire in the next few months now.

XWiki - Unrestricted Access only in the Internal Network
As of yesterday, Monday 4.11.2024, 15.00 h the REST-API of the XWiki service is now only accessible via the internal network. This means that access is only possible via a direct intranet connection or via VPN/SSH tunnel.

(The REST API (Representational State Transfer - Application Programming Interface) enables standardized communication and data exchange in the XWiki system).

Please note that due to the restriction, access to information or saving changes may be limited. Check availability via VPN/SSH before making major edits.

Blocking of the commercial Anaconda Inc. repositories
Access to commercial channels and software repositories of Anaconda Inc. has been blocked DESY-wide with immediate effect.

Anaconda Inc. meanwhile considers research institutions like DESY as commercial users, for which corresponding usage fees apply. To prevent accidental use of non-free services it has been decided to block access to the Anaconda Inc. repositories (repo.anaconda.com) from the DESY network with immediate effect.

Existing conda environments and the Windows DSM installations will not be affected. Access to conda-forge and all other free channels hosted on anaconda.org will still be possible. Only the access to the non-free anaconda channels and download of the Anaconda Inc. provided installers (anaconda, miniconda) will not be possible anymore. We recommend to use miniforge (https://github.com/conda-forge/miniforge) instead.

Please get in touch with UCO (uco@desy.de) in the very unlikely case of problems due to the blocking of the commercial anaconda channels.

Availability of Ubuntu 24.04
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is now available for installation on server and desktop systems.

Ubuntu 24.04 for server installations is in production status and the version of Ubuntu to choose.

Furthermore, Ubuntu 24.04 is also available as a green desktop.

There are some notes on this:
1. Ubuntu 24.04 is the recommended installation version.
Due to the few installations of Ubuntu 24.04 on desktops currently, the present status is "early production".
On request, we will install 22.04 systems until 01.01.2025. After this date, new 22.04 installations on desktops are subject to individual decisions.

2. Existing 22.04 green desktops receive support and updates until April 2027.
Existing 20.04 green desktops receive support and updates until April 2025.
(Support for new hardware or software might be limited though, in case of problems a migration might be recommended)

3. When you want to upgrade a green desktop from 22.04 or 20.04, a new installation is required.
Since Ubuntu 20.04 it is possible to keep the home partition, but this feature is only used occasionally.
Unexpected states on some systems could create issues, so please backup your data as a precaution.
Please note in the request if you want to use this function with the new installation.

The end of life for Ubuntu 20.04 will be in April 2025.
Please plan to migrate from Ubuntu 20.04 to Ubuntu 24.04 or another supported distribution during the lifetime of Ubuntu 20.04.
