Maintenance of the central Datanetwork Infrastructure
On Tuesday, 06.01.2026, between 4:00 AM and 8:00 AM, maintenance work will be carried out on the infrastructure components of the data center. This includes firmware upgrades, configuration adjustments for network components, and testing of power supplies. During this time, uninterrupted operation of IT services cannot be guaranteed, and short-term interruptions may occur.

From 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, the main data center will be network-isolated for a functional test of the disaster recovery center. As a result, only backup services from RZ-3 (Building 3) will be available for the operation of the campus and control networks.

If the maintenance proceeds as planned, the following services will remain continuously available:
- Telephony
- WLAN
- VPN
- Central authentication services (LDAP & Kerberos)
- Oracle databases (read-only)
- Wired network (LAN)
- Internet connection (WAN)
- Network name resolution (DNS)
- IP address assignment (DHCP)

All other services will not be available during this time. This includes, for example:
- Email
- Sync & Share
- Central data storage systems (e.g., home directories like H)

Change of the licensing method for JetBrains
Starting Friday, 19.12.2025, the central JetBrains licence server at the DESY computing center will be shut down. Instead, JetBrains' online license server will be used for software licensing.

Users who wish to continue using JetBrains, please create a JetBrains account with their personal email address (firstname.lastname@desy.de):

Finished: Maintenance Work on the Telephone Service (FreePBX)
The maintenance work was finished at 15:00h. Affected telephones that have not yet been re-registered can be put back into operation by briefly disconnecting the network cable.

On Monday, 15.12.2025, maintenance work will be carried out on the telephone service FreePBX throughout the day. During this time, the IP phones connected to the new telephone system (FreePBX) will register multiple times. This will interrupt active conversation connections.

The following device types are affected:
- All Yealink IP phones
- Cisco CP-7841 phones where the hint "FreePBX" is visible in the top right corner of the phone display
- Some Gigaset DECT phones

If a Gigaset DECT phone does not have a connection to the server, the connection can be restored by restarting the base station (temporarily disconnecting the power).

The website "phonemgr.desy.de" and the softphones "Sangoma phone" will not be available during the maintenance work.

Release of the monthly Windows Updates
On Friday, 12.12.2025, the monthly Windows Updates will be released. Please install them on your DESY Windows devices as soon as possible to ensure that they are up-to-date and secure.

To do this, connect your Windows device to the internal DESY network after the updates have been released. Use VPN if you are extern. When prompted or at the end of the day, restart or shut down your Windows device.

Seven days after the release of the updates, a forced restart of the computers will take place if this has not taken place in the meantime.


Hint:

Next Wednesday, 17.12.2025, from 17:00 to max. 20:00, trouble-free working in the Windows environment cannot be guaranteed due to the monthly maintenance work on the central Windows servers.

It is recommended to log off or shut down DESY Windows devices on Wednesday before the maintenance starts. You should also log off from public Windows systems (terminal servers) beforehand.

in progressSync & Share: Unexpected behaviour when moving shared data
In this storage service, the default settings for permissions when sharing a directory may lead to unplanned behaviour, which we would like to draw your attention to with this information.

The behaviour is based on the fact that the default settings also include the right to delete. The result can be that data becomes inaccessible to the person who shared the data if one of the persons with whom the data was shared moves it; this corresponds to copying it to the target folder and then deleting it in the source folder.
The files and directories are not lost, but are now in the directory tree of the person who moved them.

To work around this issue until it is fixed, the recommendation is not to move any data that has been shared with you via Sync & Share. Persons already affected will be informed directly.

A support request is in progress at the manufacturer.

Computer Center and UCO Opening Hours towards the End of the Year
By the end of the year, the DESY data center and the UCO will be staffed:

- Mon., 22.12. and Tue., 23.12.
- Mon., 29.12. and Tue., 30.12.
- Fri., 02.01.

Each day from 9:00h; Mon.+Tue. until 17:00h / Fri. until 15:00h. The processing of requests may take longer during this period.

In addition, the PC workshop will not be staffed from 29.12. to 02.01. inclusive.

On the following days the DESY computer center as well as the UCO won't be staffed and thus only the IT on-call service will be reachable on the following days:

- Wed., 24.12. until Fri., 26.12.
- Wed., 31.12. and Thu., 01.01.

From Monday, 05.01.2026, we will be available again as usual:

The acceptance of goods during opening hours and the continuous supervision of critical services are guaranteed. The telephone numbers of the IT on-call service are known to the experiment and machine control rooms as well as the technical emergency service.
